York Street

Project Description

Bury has a number of old, inner industrial areas. Many of these areas have retained substantial levels of employment and seen re-investment in infrastructure and property. The York Street area has however suffered structural decline to such a degree that employment within the area is relatively low. The area is also characterised by low land values, poor visual appearance and a poor environment, including:

  • Derelict and abandoned buildings;
  • Vacant land;
  • Marginal land uses;
  • Abandoned upper mill floors;
  • Crime and vandalism;
  • Ground condition problems;
  • Back of flags development that leads to lack of servicing and car parking; and
  • Small pockets of housing in close proximity to business uses.

Progress to Date

This major project is to be implemented over the next 5 years. To date an initial Business Questionnaire Survey has been completed to establish an information baseline. In 2002/03 an Action Plan was developed in partnership with the many interests within the York Street area to:

  • Stimulate inward investment;
  • Help existing industry within the area to grow, adapt and modernise; and
  • Co-ordinate environmental and business regeneration opportunities.

Funding

£30,000 SRB5 funding has been secured for the initial survey and consultation stage to explore options and to develop an Action Plan to bring about the regeneration of the area.
