Ramsbottom Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS)

Project background

The HERS project is a three year grant programme jointly funded by English Heritage and Bury Council. The scheme is primarily targeted on building repair and restoration of commercial properties in the Ramsbottom Town Centre Conservation area focusing on key buildings and seeking to enable flats over shops to be established. The project is also designed to stimulate wider townscape enhancement which contribute to the regeneration of the town centre as a whole.

Progress to date

Works have been completed on commercial properties at 36 Bridge Street and 50 Bolton Street, resulting in substantial townscape improvement. The key target for the Ramsbottom HERS project (2001/02/03) is the former Co-op building on Bolton Street. Architects have been appointed and a feasibility study is being progressed. Further restoration works at 10-12 Square Street are being developed with the potential to develop flats over shops above commercial units, including the former Co-op building.

Outputs

  • Restoration of key elements of the fabric of the Conservation Area. (27 commercial properties/600 square metres floorspace improved)
  • Creation of new residential accommodation.
  • Stimulation of the regeneration of the town centre, 4 key open spaces, 8000 square metres.
  • Creation of viable use for key town centre buildings.

Funding

Funding for the initiative is established through a 3 year agreement with a grant contribution from English Heritage and Bury Council expected to lever substantial private investment. Parallel environmental improvement schemes will need to be individually worked up with funding to be sought from appropriate bodies in the forthcoming financial years.

Project costs

The scheme is made up of a number of individual projects who will share a grant budget of £100,000 per year, over three years (i.e total grant budget £300,000).
