Project description
The HERS project is a three year grant programme jointly funded by English Heritage and Bury MBC. The scheme is in its final year and is targeted on building repair and restoration of commercial properties in the St. Mary's Park Conservation Area, Prestwich and focusing on Bury New Road. The project is designed to stimulate other enhancement in Prestwich Clough and the Park as well as contribute to the regeneration of the town centre.
Progress to date
To date, progress on the implementation of the project has been delayed for a variety of reasons relating to the ownership of the properties. However, the priority target properties are all currently at tender stage and working toward commencement on site in January 2002. Supported schemes include a grant offer to the owner of 1 Church Lane to secure the restoration of this key corner unit, as well restoration of 395-399 Bury New Road, which includes conversion of the upper floors to new flat units. Interest in the scheme has also generated other investment in this commercial terrace, which is an important gateway into Prestwich Village.
Outputs
- Restoration of 7 commercial properties (800sqm floorspace), which are key elements of the fabric of the Conservation Area.
- Creation of upto 14 new flats above shops.
- Stimulation of the regeneration of the town centre
- Creation of new viable use for these key town centre gateway buildings.
Project costs
The scheme is made up of a number of individual projects which will share a grant budget of £240,000 comprising the total grant budget. Building ownership issues have resulted in delays to the implementation of the project by the property owners but both Bury MBC & English Heritage rolled the grant budget into the final year on the expectation that the regeneration objectives will then be met.
Funding
Funding for this important regeneration initiative has been established with equal grant contributions from English Heritage and Bury Council and is expected to lever substantial private investment into this run down part of the village. The scheme will complement the other major improvement works programmed for Prestwich Village throughout 2002 and 2003.
