Project Description
The Pimhole Project aims to regenerate the Pimhole scrap yard area dominated by vehicle breakers near residential areas and St Thomas's Primary School. The Project tackles the area's long standing problems of conflicts between business and residential uses, traffic problems, pollution and contamination with associated health and safety risks, and a generally poor environment.
Pimhole Project Steering Group
At the outset of the Project's launch in 2000 a Pimhole Steering Group was set up with representatives from businesses, residents, St Thomas’s Primary School, the Environment Agency, Bury Council and Groundwork Bury. The Steering Group chaired by Groundwork Bury has been meeting every 6-8 weeks to develop and implement the project.
Pimhole Project Action Plan
Based on the consultation/survey work carried out in 2001/02, an Action Plan was adopted in 2002 to provide a basis for a range of improvement schemes including:
- Environmental Audit of businesses in the project area;
- Production of Good Practice Manual for Vehicle Breakers;
- Pimhole Estate Road;
- Traffic calming of school corridor;
- Public Right of Way improvement;
- Business boundary improvement;
- Reclamation of derelict land including disused reservoir;
- Assistance to individual businesses to improve business infrastructures.
All these schemes have been implemented and/or being carried out as well as additional milestones achieved such as land acquisition and site investigation funded by the North West Development Agency (NWDA).
Pimhole Estate Road
The key proposal of the Pimhole Project Action Plan, the Pimhole Estate Road scheme has received a funding package of £1,036,440 from NWDA, Single Regeneration Budget (SRB), Bury Council, Business Investment Programme European Regeneration Development Fund(ERDF) and private sector. The works have been ongoing since August 2005 with the expected completion in January 2006.
Post Project Management
To ensure a sustainable regeneration the post project strategy is being developed in the form of Pimhole Business Park Forum represented by Pimhole business community working together with other partners.
