The creation of a national network of cycle routes was the outcome of a £43.5 million award from the Lottery Millennium Commission to sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, in 1995. Sustrans worked with numerous partners in creating the network of 10,000 miles, which was opened in 2005.
Route 6 of the network passes through Bury on its way from Windsor to Keswick and in large part in Bury follows the south - north recreation route proposed in the 1997 Unitary Development Plan. The (mostly off-road) route has been created or improved incrementally as opportunities have arisen and has included discrete projects at:
- Rainsough,
- Waterdale,
- Outwood Trail,
- Outwood viaduct,
- MBB Canal towpath,
- Daisyfield Greenway,
- Woodhill bike path, and
- Kirklees Trail.
It is signed, although in two places, Woolfold and Holcombe Brook, it follows an interim route pending construction of the preferred route.
