Kirklees Trail (NCN6)

Project Description

The Trail was originally developed as a walk along the Tottington to Greenmount section of the former Holcombe Brook railway line in the late 1970's. It was adapted, improved and extended as part of the National Cycle Network in three phases, with funding from the North West Development Agency, in 2000/02. The improvements cost in the order of £250,000 and provided 3 kms of multi-user path.

Progress to Date

The Unitary Development Plan proposes the extension of the path southwards to Brandlesholme Road and then to Woodhill Road to link with the existing Woodhill bike path. Opportunities are currently being sought to obtain the land and funding to make this happen. Consultants have been appointed to design the section through Woolfold, which will require the provision of a new bridge over Kirklees Brook.

The section between Brandlesholme and Woodhill Roads will be constructed by a private developer as a requirement of a planning permission for a residential development.

Cost

This design work will cost £27,500 in 2005/06. Preparatory sketch designs and Site Investigations work were funded by the North West Development Agency in 2003/05.
