The quality and variety of historic landscapes, settlements, individual buildings and archaeological sites within the borough, create a rich legacy and physical evidence, of human activity, growth and development from the mesolithic period, approximately 5000 BC.
The sites and buildings that have been left to us are a substantial physical asset, which includes:
- 4 Scheduled Ancient Monuments;
- 325 listed buildings;
- 9 conservation areas; and
- 1300 entries in the Site and Monuments Records.
The components collectively create a varied and valuable heritage resource, which together document the unique character of the Borough's social and economic development.
The value of the Borough's built heritage goes far beyond the aesthetic, it also embraces social qualities, such as a sense of local pride, identity and historical continuity. Our heritage also contributes to meet the economic needs of a vibrant and expanding area, by setting the context for future sustainable growth. The Council, therefore, aims to achieve effective protection and management of our heritage resource, by establishing that the conservation, protection and enhancement of our historic sites and buildings will be a key planning strategy, guiding both the control of development and urban regeneration projects.
