Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis)

Cat flea

Size: 2-3.5mm
Colour: Brown

Information

The human flea, which until recent years was common in Britain, is now quite rare. Surveys carried out in the Greater Manchester area have shown that over 90% of infestations in houses are cat fleas. The majority of the remainder being bird fleas. (A lot of the fleas found on dogs are also cat fleas). The visual differences between the various types of fleas are so slight that a microscope or powerful hand lens is required to spot them. Colour or size is no guide, a well fed flea being much darker and larger than a half starved one.

Contrary to popular belief, cat fleas do not live on their hosts. A cat will carry an average of only 21 fleas at any one time. The fleas simply jump onto a cat for their daily meal and then off again. Fleas spend most of their time in the places where a cat sleeps. These places can have a population of many thousands of fleas in various stages of development. Female fleas lay their eggs anywhere in carpets or other materials.

Control

Use an insecticidal power or aerosol, obtainable from a vet or a pet shop, on domestic pets and pet sleeping areas, following the directions on the container.

Rugs and pillows used by pets should be machine washed in very hot water or disposed of.

Persistent and thorough use of the vacuum cleaner, especially using a suction pipe along the edges of fitted carpets will remove most of the household flea population.

Spraying floors and carpets with a liquid insecticide is also recommended. This can be carried out by the Council's Pest Control Unit. If any further information is required on flea or other types of infestation, telephone Environmental Services on 0161 253 5353.

Precautions

Insecticide can be used to treat infested premises and protect them from reinfestation. In addition, animals can be treated directly. Insecticidal products are available which have been specifically formulated and registered for use on animals.

Finally, don't be tempted to get rid of the cat or dog, you could make matters worse!

Whenever insecticides are used, read and follow the instructions on the label carefully.
