Will you join our dig for victory?
With Bury having won the annual North West in Bloom contest for three years in a row in 2004, 2005 and 2006, our town has been chosen to represent the region at the national Britain in Bloom finals in the Summer of 2007. Bury will compete in the ‘large town’ category against Bangor, Durham, Horsham, Rugby and Stevenage.
The UK is divided into areas for the Britain in Bloom campaign – the North West being one of 12 regions – and split into ten categories based on the population. To gain any award in the national contest demands exceptional standards in the sections being judged.
Despite its title the competition, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, will see the town judged on much more than just floral splendour. Judges will be marking the entry on its green and clean environment as well as business and community involvement.
When will Bury be judged?
The official judging for Britain in Bloom will take place during the Summer on a specified day between the start of July and the end of August, but unannounced judging, when judges will visit without warning, will take place between Saturday 21 April and Sunday 13 May.
How you can help
Bury Council's Street Care and Grounds Maintenance Teams busily prepare our streets, public parks, gardens and open spaces for the inspection, but you can also help turn regional success into national glory.
Residents and community groups can help by:
- keeping residential front and back gardens tidy and looking their best;
- getting involved in creating a community garden or helping maintain a public open space;
- improving a grot spot by organising a local clean-up;
- supporting a local park by volunteering or joining a gardening club;
- helping the environment by reducing, re-using and recycling rubbish.
Schools can help by:
- getting involved with environmental improvements, planting for wildlife, recycling initiatives and keeping the school grounds tidy and free of litter.
Businesses can help by:
- sponsoring a roundabout, grass verge or public garden area;
- sponsoring a hanging basket that will be maintained by Bury Metro gardeners;
- keeping their own premises neat and tidy and clearing them of weeds.
