Bury - Best large town, North West in Bloom

Each year our Parks & Countryside Service lead Bury's entry in the North West in Bloom competition organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.  Bury has been awarded 'Best large town in the North West' for four consecutive years - 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.  This page explains the aims of the campaign and the judging criteria.  Use the links on the left-hand side of this page for more information. 

Aims of our 'in bloom' campaign

This national and regional horticultural campaign aims to regenerate the local environment by the planting of trees and shrubs, flowers and landscaping and also by dealing with environmental issues such as litter, graffiti and vandalism.  

Judging criteria

During the competition Bury are judged on the following: 

Floral Displays

  • in public parks, town gardens, war memorials and recreational areas
  • on public buildings and roadside planting including roundabouts
  • for business/commercial buildings and grounds
  • in residential gardens – housing areas
  • including hanging baskets, containers and bedding displays
  • designed, planted and maintained by the community

Permanent Landscaping including Shrubs

  • on housing developments
  • on industrial estates, business and retail parks, commercial premises
  • in public parks, recreation areas
  • involving the community

Local Agenda 21

and Sustainable Development (reducing our use of energy, raw materials and production of pollution and wastes, protecting animals and the habitats in which they live)
  • conservation
  • waste minimisation and recycling
  • community involvement, for example, Voluntary Park Rangers

Local Environmental Quality

  • cleanliness of streets, the town centres and of functional sites (for example, absence of litter, graffiti, dog fouling)
  • "general feel" of the Borough (for example, tidiness throughout community areas)
  • community clean up projects

Public Awareness

  • the marketing, publicity and promotion of Britain in Bloom
