Dog microchipping

We provide a free microchipping service for dogs to people who are receiving state benefits or state pension.

The microchips are provided by "Dogs Trust" and our dog wardens will microchip your dog by appointment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the service about?
To enable lost dogs to be returned to their owners.

How much does it cost?
The service is free to persons receiving state pension or state benefits (proof required). Anyone who is not entitled to the free service will have to pay either a veterinary surgeon or Pets Trust (previously known as "The National Canine Defence League".

How can I get my dog microchipped?
If you are entitled to the free service, contact the dog warden service on: 0161 253 5353 for an appointment. All other dog owners can contact their local veterinary surgeon's office, and they carry out this task for you.  To find your local veterinary surgeon go to: Yell.com

How do I notify you of changes to my record?
When a dog is microchipped you are provided with a unique number for the dog, and an address and telephone to contact. If you change your address you contact the microchip supplier and inform them of the changes you require.

A computerised recording system of microchip numbers will give instant information as to the dog's name as well as the address and telephone number of owners.

What happens if my dog is lost?
The microchip contains ownership details and enables return of the dog to its rightful owner.

Lost or stray dogs will be returned to the owner if picked up by one of the Dog Wardens in the area. This will apply during normal working hours, Monday to Friday, providing the dog has a valid collar/disc and microchip.

We also have a limited alternating weekend cover for this service. All reasonable steps will be taken to contact the owner should they not be at home when calling.

If contact is not made or the dog is a known persistent offender, the dog will be taken to the Manchester Dog's Home where there is a charge for the kennelling facility for safe keeping and local authority administration costs.
