Frequently Asked Questions - Newly Qualified Teachers (Secondary & Primary)

Newly Qualified Teachers, having gained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) can undertake short-term supply placements in schools.

Placements, which at the outset are for a term or more can, with the agreement of the Headteacher, count towards induction.

Short term supply placements of less than a term cannot be aggregated to count towards induction, nor can they be counted if, at a later point, they become long-term placements lasting for more than a term (for instance if extended).

NQTs are only permitted to undertake short-term supply placements, for less than a term, for four terms only. This four term limit starts as soon as a first placement and is measured as a fixed calendar period, rather than an aggregation of short-term supply work. Therefore, once taking up the first short-term supply post the “clock starts ticking” and does not stop during periods when not undertaking such supply work.

Newly Qualified Teachers on the Supply Register

A period of employment or engagement at a school of at least one term not with a contract of employment is the minimum period of time a temporary teacher can use to count towards their induction.

A newly qualified teacher is not permitted to complete their induction by aggregating periods of short term supply teaching of less than one term.

Once a NQT teacher starts supply work the clock will be ticking from that point in time irrespective of whether they have one day's employment or a term.  NQTs have 4 terms in all to complete their induction after that period elapses the next teaching post must be of one term minimum and the school must be prepared to support the induction process.
