Personal development curriculum

The personal development curriculum encompasses any area of learning at key stage 4 that promotes students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and helps prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Extra-curricular and enhancement activities also make a major contribution to the personal development curriculum.  Personal development includes pupils' involvement in their own learning including reviewing and recording progress and target setting.  Further information can be found on the Link to external web siteQualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) website.  Personal development of the individual is at the heart of personalised learning.  For research on personalised learning, view the Link to external web siteinformation available on the Teachernet site.

Progress File

Progress File is an interactive set of guides designed to help young people identify their skills. It is a tool for helping individuals plan their own learning and their career development, recognising the knowledge, understanding and skills they are acquiring and how to record these achievements effectively. As part Bury's Enterprise Learning Pathfinder, Bury schools have been trialing and further developing an On-line Progress File (OLPF) partnership with Positive Steps Oldham (formerly Oldham Education Business and Guidance Services).  Oldham had already begun developing the resource under its 14-19 Pathfinder. Schools can access the Link to external web siteOn-Line Progress File website with a username and password.

Please note: the DfES recently announced that the paper-based materials will no longer be available after 13 April 2006 (see Link to external web sitewww.dfes.gov.uk/progressfile for the full announcement).  OLPF is continuing to develop and grow.

Two development groups were formed. The first group involved staff from six Bury schools in developing and writing an enterprise section. The second group focused on the use of the existing website. Both groups involved their pupils in trialing materials.

The following case studies are from the second development group and show how six Bury schools have approached using the on-line resource. The case studies include the context, activity, outcomes and next steps for each of the schools. In addition, a case study of guiding principles and suggested models of delivery is included.
