Enterprise learning

What is Enterprise?

Enterprise education is a key element of the non-statutory work-related learning framework  aiming to encourage young people to be more enterprising.  Enterprise education consists of enterprise capability, supported by financial capability and economic and business understanding.  Enterprise however is not only about making money. People working on municipal or school councils, charity committees and other community organisations need the same enterprising attributes as those in the paid workforce.  Enterprise Education includes personal, social and business enterprise. The Teachernet website offers guidance on Enterprise Education.

Bury's Enterprise Learning Pathfinder

This section of the 14-19 website is the legacy from Bury's Enterprise Learning Pathfinder which finished on 31 August 2005. It has links to the work related learning section and the personal development curriculum. The aims of the Pathfinder were set out in the bid submitted to the DfES in June 2004. The bid was a collaborative one involving all Bury High schools, including one Special School.  The bid was developed and written by the lead school, Castlebrook High School supported by the Bury Learning Partnership.

Notification of the success of the bid was received in July 2003 giving funding of £399,000 over two years.  The funding distribution of £8,500 (September 2003 – March 2004), £261,500 (April 2004-August 2005) and £129,000 (September 2004 – August 2005) resulted in revision of the timeline for activity and associated funding.  The Learning Pathfinder Manager was appointed from March 2004 working across all the schools.  Each school was able to appoint an Enterprise Learning Co-ordinator and a Specialist Enterprise Learning Co-ordinator. The Special School chose to appoint three co-ordinators.

The Pathfinder was borough-wide with over 60% of the funding being allocated directly to schools.

Accountability

An Enterprise Learning Steering Group has overseen the work of the Pathfinder.  Bury Learning Partnership's 14-19 Task Group has received regular updates.  Termly reports to the DfES have been required along with a final report called Enterprise Learning Pathfinder Bid (40kb, 7-page pdf) and an external evaluation called Evaluation of the Bury Enterprise Learning Pathfinder (31kb, 4-page pdf)

Sustainability

From September 2005 all key stage 4 pupils have an entitlement to the equivalent of five days enterprise learning.  Schools have received funding to support the delivery of this entitlement through Standards Fund 2005 to 2006.  During the latter stages of the Pathfinder the emphasis has been on dissemination, celebration and sustainability.  The emerging sustainability strives to ensure a seamless transition towards the entitlement.

Schools have access to www.myprogressfile.com which has an Enterprise section written by teachers from six Bury schools.

Enterprise Advisor Service (EAS)

This service was available to all schools in Bury in 2005-2006 and has now ceased.  EAS has supported the update of the Enterprise Northwest website.  This website is aimed at teachers, lecturers and organisations across the Northwest that are interested in enterprise or entrepreneurship education for young people.
