In 2004, all Bury secondary schools were invited by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) - now known as the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) - to form a partnership of two Excellence Clusters. Excellence clusters are on an extension of the 1999 DfES initiative called Excellence in Cities, which provides additional government funding to cater for the educational needs of pupils in deprived areas of large cities.
