The Social Care Emergency Duty Team works to provide support for a variety of people, including,
- Children, young people and families
- Older People
- People with mental health difficulties
- People with physical or sensory disabilities
- People with learning disability
- People with drug, alcohol or other health related problems
- People with housing or accommodation problems
- Women fleeing domestic violence
- Asylum seekers
The Emergency Duty Team provides advice and assistance when day service teams and social workers are not available.
Whilst advice and support are generally available at all times, demands upon the Emergency Duty Team are such that work undertaken requiring visits must need urgent attention and involve situations which will not wait until the social work office reopens. Priority is given to statutory work under the Children Act and 1983 Mental Health Act.

The team can either assist directly or link to the appropriate service in connection with:-
- Children, Young People and Families
- Child Protection, Assessment and Investigation
- Child Protection Register custodianship
- Crisis fostering
- Crisis home-care support for families
- Residential Care placement (Remand & P.A.C.E)
- Women In Need refuge placement
- Adults and their carers
- Home-care support
- Meals on wheels
- Emergency residential care
- Homelessness involving young people, disabled persons and vulnerable adults
- Mental health assessments
Some of work undertaken
The Emergency Duty Team provides a social work service during the periods when daytime social work offices are closed. This usually means during the evenings, overnight, weekends, and Bank and other Public holidays.
The service is available seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The Emergency Duty Team are the custodians of the Child Protection Register during 'out of hours' periods and provide valuable information to other designated agencies.
The team provides direct support for foster carers and children looked after by the Authority. It will attempt to find vacancies and make placements in those situations that require such action.
The Emergency Duty Team has links with a wide range of other agencies that it can contact to try to assist with the resolution of a problem.
In respect of adults and other service users, the Emergency Duty Team has many links into other services and agencies. It does, however provide social workers approved under the Mental Health Act for those suffering from mental health problems.
The team can also arrange for provision of emergency respite care for the elderly in certain circumstances.
This is by no means the full extent of the work carried out by the team.
