The population of Bury rose between 1991 and 2001 by 1.3%. 19% of the population had a limiting long-term illness, a rise of 5% since 1991. 6.1% of the population described themselves as belonging to a black and minority ethnic group (BME). There has been an increase in the BME community of 2.5% since 1991 in Bury. The largest BME group was the Pakistani community, which made up 3% of Bury's population.
Households: Total number of households = 74335
The total number of households has risen by 5082 since 1991. In 2001 the average household in Bury contained 2.4 people a slight decrease of 0.1 since 1991.
7.4% (5483) of households were one parent families – of this figure 90.6% (4970) were female lone parents.
Housing
Of 74335 households, 75.5% (56142) were in owner occupied properties. 10.9% (8090) of households rented from the council, this shows a drop of 5.1% since 1991. 7.6% of households had no central heating. 3.2% of all household spaces were vacant (2446). There were 119 communal establishments (for example nursing homes and hostels), with 2234 residents.
Economic activity
64.8% of the population aged between 16-74 were in employment. However not all of the 16-74 age group were economically active. Of the 87797 people in that age group who were economically active, 95.5 % were in employment. 0.4% were full-time students.
4.1% of the economically active population were unemployed. 61.6% of the working population in Bury travelled to work by car or van. 70.8% of the 16-74 age group were qualified to at least level 1 (1 'O' level / CSE / GCSE / NVQ level 1 or Foundation GNVQ)
