There was an increase in the proportion of residents with a limiting long-term illness between 1991 and 2001, from 14% to 19%. This is part of an ongoing national trend, partly as a result of the increased life expectancy among the general population. For the first time in a national Census a question was asked about unpaid care. The figures suggest that one in ten residents provide some form of unpaid care, a proportion which could have implications for work-life balance initiatives. 3.4 % of the population to (6104 people) provide more than 20 hours unpaid care per week.
