2001 work related data relates to the population aged 16 to 74 and as such has no comparison in the 1991 data. However, 2001 data shows that Bury had one of the lowest unemployment rates in Greater Manchester and one of the highest proportions of people who travel to work by car.
Economic activity is defined as those people who are available for work over the age of 16 and below the age of 74. This includes those working either in full-time or part-time employment for an employer, self-employed, trainees on government schemes, unemployed and full time students in work. Economically inactive includes those who at the time of the census were permanently sick, retired, students not working or, looking after the home or family.
The 'wholesale and retail and repair of motor vehicle' industry was the most common industry of employment in the Borough (18.9%), closely followed by the 'manufacturing' industry which made up 16.3% of the job types. The division of labour between the sexes is distinct with the most common job by industry for females being that of 'health and social work', 21.8% and for men the most common job type was that of 'manufacturing' 23.2%.
Travelling to work by car or van was the most common method of transport to work in the Borough with 61.6% of the employed population using this method. Since the 1991 census, the 'Metrolink' tram system has been in place in Bury, surprisingly only 4.3% of the working population use this transportation method to get to work. Bury is ranked 185 out of 376 Local Authorities for having a population with highest qualification 'degree' level or higher.
