For the population over 16, 44.5% were married in 2001 compared to 47% in 1991. 8.6% of the population of Bury were divorced in 2001 compared to 5.2% in 1991.
In 2001 30%, (22395) households were made up of a family consisting of a couple (married or cohabiting) with children, this compares with 26.5% in 1991.
The 1991 Census indicated a total of 69,253 households in Bury MBC, in 2001 this figure had risen by 7% to a total of 74,335 households. In 1991 32.5% (22,529) of all households contained at least one dependent child. This percentage had hardly changed by 2001 with 32.3% (23,997) households containing at least one dependent child. Not surprisingly there were more cars in 2001 than in 1991. In 1991 32% of households did not have a car, by 2001 this proportion had dropped to 26%, one of the lowest rates in Greater Manchester. Similarly, whereas 24% of households had two or more cars in 1991, this proportion increased to 30% in 2001. Nationally, there was an increase in the number of lone parent families during the period 1991 to 2001, and Bury was no exception. By 2001 one in ten households consisted of a lone parent with children.
