A message of welcome from the Chief Executive of Bury

Chief Executive - Mark Sanders

With a growing population of over 180,000, Bury is an integral yet distinctive part of Greater Manchester metropolitan area, which is itself the regional centre of North West England, the United Kingdom's largest economic region outside London. Bury offers a variety of lifestyles ranging from cosmopolitan city suburbs, through urban centres of character and individual identity, to semi-rural locations in the Pennine foothills, making it an attractive place for leisure and recreation as well as work. Visit for instance the Irwell Sculpture Trail, Britain's largest public art scheme or our famous East Lancashire Steam Railway.

Bury's communications are a strength both in terms of accessibility to other parts of the conurbation and to wider markets beyond. Sitting astride the M62 motorway, at its intersection with the north - south M66 motorway, and alongside the newly completed M60 orbital motorway, Bury has running through it the United Kingdom's most significant east - west route which links the country's European and Atlantic seaboards via some of its most important manufacturing areas. Bury is linked to the regional centre by Metrolink, the United Kingdom's first light rapid transit system to combine conventional rail and on-street city centre running. Metrolink provides a fast, environmentally friendly means of transport between Bury's major population centres and the city centre, which has commercial, cultural and entertainment facilities, including the largest centre of corporate finance activity outside London, and readily accessible InterCity rail service to London and, of course, one of Britain's largest airports.

In summary, Bury is a place that combines the advantages of a conurbation location with a community centred lifestyle and high quality environment in a variety of urban and semi-rural locations - a great place to live, work and visit.
