Willkommen nach Bury

Schorndorf has been officially twinned with Bury since 1994.  It lies at the eastern extremity of the conurbation of Stuttgart, which is the capital of the German state of Baden-Wurttemburg.  It is a picturesque, medieval, walled market town of some 35,000 inhabitants, many of whom commute to Stuttgart with its varied commerce and industry.  Schorndorf itself concentrates on viniculture, small trades and light industry.

Important buildings in Schorndorf are the Rat Hause (Town Hall) in the Markt Platz; the Schloss (still in use as a legal and administrative centre) the Town Church; and the Gottlieb Daimler birthplace – now a Museum to Schorndorf’s most famous son.

A science and arts museum, with some of Gottlieb Daimler’s early vehicles, has recently opened.  Schorndorf also has memorials to a famous woman, Barbara Kunkelin, who successfully led other women to defend the town, when it was under siege.  The scene is portrayed in a mosaic on the rear, outer wall of the Town Hall and is also painted inside the Council Chamber.

Bury Platz is adjacent to the Gottlieb Daimler Real-Schule and the Max Planke Gymnasium.  It is a designated meeting place for the students of both schools and ha a cobbled area depicting a map of the British Isles, with Bury at its heart.

In addition to Bury, Schorndorf is twinned with tulle in France, Kahla in former eastern Gernmany, Dueville in Italy, Renteria in Spain, Lousada in Portugal and Tuscaloosa in the USA.
