What time do the cemetery gates open and close?
In the winter, the gates open at 8am and close at 6pm. In the summer, the gates open at 8am and close at dusk.
When were the cemeteries first opened?
Ramsbottom opened in 1872, Bury in 1869 and Radcliffe in 1906.
Do you do family searches?
Yes, but a fee may be charged.

Yes, in the presence of a Council Officer.

A grave can be found if a name is given, but not an address only.

Is the gardening of graves allowed?
Yes, but only up to a metre square in front of the headstone
Do you issue duplicate grave papers?
Duplicate grave papers are not issued unless it can be proved that the deeds have been destroyed or stolen. Proof has to be given by the person requesting the duplicate deeds that they are the legal owner or next of kin, a charge will be made for the duplicate grave deeds. In some instances the parties involved will have go to consult the Legal Section of the Council or a solicitor.
I cannot find my grave papers, what should I do?
An indemnity has to be signed when the grave has to be opened for an interment.

A family grave can contain up to four coffins, subject to ground conditions.
Do you have a garden of remembrance?
Are side stones allowed?
Full side stones are not permitted under the Cemeteries' health and safety regulations and also because of the maintenance of plots.
Can I put a memorial on a public grave?
Public Graves are owned by the Council, therefore no individual family has claim to the grave, and no headstone is allowed on the grave unless the council gives consent for a small memorial.
Is there a woodland burial area?
Yes, Radcliffe Cemetery has a "green" area where trees are planted instead of laying headstones
Is there a pet cemetery?

How much notice do I need to give in order to have a grave opened?
Two clear days
