In 1999 Bury Council established six area boards within the town which aimed to provide a link between local people, council services and services of Council partners. The boards have established a co-ordination of the services that affect local people and communities.

Area one - Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor
The largest of the six Area Boards, the majority of the District’s Greenbelt and open moorland are contained in the Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor Area Board.

Area two - Bury West, Elton and Church
Bury West is mainly a built up area developed along the main radial roads into Bury from the west and north and is the only one of the Borough’s six Area Board areas not to have a town centre in its own right.

Area three - Bury East, Moorside and Redvales
Bury East is the part of Bury on the eastern side of the River Irwell which also includes the whole of Bury town centre.

Area four - Radcliffe, Radcliffe North, Radcliffe East and Radcliffe West
Radcliffe is known as ‘the red cliffe’ taken from the Old English words ‘read’ and ‘clif’,
and is the Borough’s most westerly town on the River Irwell.

Area five - Whitefield, Unsworth, Besses and Pilkington Park
The town of Whitefield was created in 1866, previously being a part of the Manor of Pilkington.

Area six - Prestwich, Holyrood, St. Mary's and Sedgley
Prestwich has a diverse community made up of people of all ages, and from different backgrounds, faiths and culture.
Along with Whitefield it welcomes the second largest Jewish community in the country.
