Smoke free laws
Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and several countries around the world have already successfully introduced smoke free laws, designed to protect workers from the effects of second hand smoke. As a result, more staff employed in bars, restaurants and pubs are breathing fresh air, thanks to smoke free laws.
Locally, Bury Metro Council, the NHS Trust and the PCT are acting now to promote the smoke free message.
As part of the Smoke Free campaign, Bury Council is able to provide workplaces with information and guidance on introducing tobacco policies and support when implementing them. Bury NHS Stop Smoking Service offers free access to quit program for staff who want to stop smoking.
Why do we need a smokefree law?
To protect workers and the public from the risks of second hand smoke. The health effects are proven and result in around three people dying each day and many more suffering ill health in the UK because of it.
