Health and safety at work investigation

Who to contact

It is the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) that deals with:

  • Factories;
  • Building sites;
  • Farms;
  • Motor vehicle repairers;
  • Quarries;
  • Chemical plants;
  • Offshore installations;
  • Schools and universities;
  • Leisure and entertainment facilities (owned by local authorities);
  • Fairgrounds;
  • Hospitals and nursing homes;
  • Local authorities;
  • Fire and police authorities;
  • Government departments and establishments (including the military);
  • Any other workplace not listed under local authorities.
The HSE is also responsible for investigating gas safety incidents in the home.

  • Offices;
  • Retail and wholesale shops - includes: cash and carry, market stalls, shoe repairers, coin-operated launderettes, mobile shops, garden centres;
  • Tyre and exhaust fitters;
  • Restaurants, take-away food shops, mobile snack bars and catering services;
  • Hotels - includes: pubs, cafes, wine bars, guest houses, hostels, holiday homes, caravan and camping sites, residential homes;
  • Wholesale or retail warehouses - excludes: those that are part of a factory or wholesalers of hazardous substances;
  • Leisure and entertainment facilities (privately owned) - includes: night-clubs, discos, bingo halls, amusement arcades, circuses, social clubs, sports facilities, health clubs, gyms, swimming pools, riding schools, pleasure-boat hire, golf clubs, motor racing circuits, race-courses, theatres and art galleries. Excludes: fairs (travelling or fixed);
  • Exhibitions;
  • Religious activities;
  • Undertakers;
  • Therapeutic and beauty services - includes: massage parlours, solariums, manicure, saunas, tattooing, skin and body piercing, hairdressing;
  • Animal care - includes: kennels, catteries, livery stables, zoos.
