In 2004 Bury MBC commissioned the Local Futures Group to produce a Knowledge Economy audit for the borough.  This local audit was based on a methodology used by the consultants in national work for the Local Government Association.  It benchmarked Bury against comparator districts nationally and in Greater Manchester, including edge of conurbation communities chosen for their similar profile to Bury.  The study also had a remit to establish how Bury might relate to the Manchester:  Knowledge Capital initiative.

The Audit contained important messages for Bury and its future direction which go to the heart of how we develop as a community over the next 20 years.  The Knowledge Economy Action Plan was drawn up to address the issues raised by the Audit.  The Action Plan was the subject of wide consultation amongst local and sub-regional partners during 2005.

A Knowledge Economy Action Plan Board, including representation from a range of partners, is now in place to drive forward activities within the Action Plan.
