There was an increase in the proportion of residents with a limiting long-term illness between 1991 and 2001, from 14% to 19%. This is part of an ongoing national trend, partly as a result of the increased life expectancy among the general population.
For the first time in a national Census a question was asked about unpaid care. The figures suggest that one in ten of residents provide some form of unpaid care, a proportion which could have implications for work-life balance initiatives.
