A major redevelopment is now underway adjacent to the town centre which will change the face of Bury forever. Due to open in autumn 2010, the £300 million development by Thornfield Properties will double the retail floor space of the town centre attracting investment and raising the profile of Bury as a retail destination.

The site located at the end of The Rock opposite Wilkinsons will be home to two department stores, Debenhams and M&S, along with 60 other shops, a 10 screen cinema, 400 apartments, a 1250 space multi-storey car park along with restaurants and new public spaces.

Rochdale Road / Angouleme Way Junction

As part of the next phase of the highway construction works for The Rock Triangle scheme, the large roundabout at the Rochdale Road/Angouleme Way junction has now been taken out of use, including the traffic signals on the roundabout. The traffic signals at the egress from Minden Parade and the Millgate car park are unaffected.

For the next two months or so, the junction will be controlled by a small roundabout at the end of Angouleme Way. Drivers are asked to exercise caution as motorists become accustomed to the new layout.

Derby Way Open

The new link road, Derby Way, has been open since the end of February. Twelve months under construction, Derby Way completes the inner ring road, connecting Rochdale Road to Moorgate. Derby Way will provide access to the new Moorgate Medical Centre due for completion in Autumn 2008.

The opening of the Derby Way will allow Thornfield’s team of construction experts to progress work on the second phase of the road alterations around the site, including changes along Rochdale Road and the removal of the Angouleme Way roundabout. It is anticipated that this phase of work will be complete by the end of August.

Saturday car parking on Bury College no longer available

Bury College car park will no longer be available for additional Saturday car parking. Very low levels of use have shown that there is virtually no demand for the facility. Therefore, after a 3 month trial period, the decision has been taken to close it. Surveys have shown that there is adequate capacity within existing town centre car parks.

Background information

We have been working closely with Thornfield on the proposals for the development of The Rock for about five years. Prior to any planning applications being submitted a Development Framework was written for the site.

The Rock Triangle Development Framework

The Rock Triangle site was identified as a potential extension to the town centre in the Bury But Better Strategy (2003). The developers of The Rock, Thornfield Properties Plc produced a Development Framework for the site in 2002. The Framework was amended in 2005 following the Bury But Better Strategy recommendations.
