Prestwich regeneration

Church Inn Prestwich Prestwich Village centre Radius flats in Prestwich

The centre of Prestwich has undergone a period of decline for many years despite having many of the raw ingredients that make up successful 'urban' villages (such as good community facilities, good access to public transport, good access to parks and green spaces, and the close proximity of residential areas to the retail centre).

There has already been significant investment in Prestwich in recent years; The Radius development (which brought town centre living and new retail space), a new M&S food store, and investment in the pedestrian infrastructure, but so far this has not yet been sufficient to reverse the decline of the centre.

However, major new development opportunities are beginning to emerge (including the potential redevelopment of the Longfield Shopping Centre and the creation a major new health care facilities) and Prestwich is likely to go through a period of significant change over the next 5 - 15 years.

Prestwich is therefore now at an important time where the development of an innovative sustainable masterplan and development strategy is needed to guide the emerging development opportunities and to unlock the full potential of the village as a vibrant and dynamic place and key destination within the Manchester conurbation.

A masterplan and development strategy for Prestwich

In December 2007 Bury Council appointed the Urban Design and Regeneration Consultancy (URBED), together with the specialist regeneration surveying practice ADGR, to produce a masterplan and development strategy.  The intention is that when the masterplan and development strategy is completed it will be adopted by Bury Council as a Material Planning Consideration.

Prestwich Local Area Partnership

Local Area Partnerships are the replacement to Area Boards and have been created to promote engagement and partnership at the local level. The overall objective of the Local Area Partnerships is “to improve the quality of life and achieve better outcomes for all people in our communities through ensuring service providers are responsive to neighbourhood needs and improve delivery". Partnership meetings are held six times a year, usually in the evenings, in local community venues. They are public meetings and everyone is welcome to attend.
