Community Economic Development

What is community economic development?

Community Economic Development (CED) is often seen as an effective means of combating social exclusion by retaining income within the area, generating jobs, enhancing skills, providing goods and services that the market is unable or unwilling to provide and empowering individuals and communities.

The aim of economic development

The aim of economic development is to break down barriers between a marginalised community and the mainstream community by focusing on disadvantaged people by developing their self-confidence and skills through participation in community enterprise and associated training initiatives.

Community enterprises

Community enterprises are owned and controlled by the local community, serving their interest.  Any financial surplus generated from their commercial activity is used for community benefit.

Types of community enterprise

There are three main types of community enterprise:

  • Community businesses;
  • Community financial services; and
  • Community organisations with a wider remit, such as Development Trusts.
