About property owners' responsibilities for empty commercial property
If you are an owner of empty commercial property you have a responsibility to make sure that your property is safe. Bury Council and the Fire Service can take action if your empty property becomes a problem.
Follow our safety advice to owners of empty commercial properties
Make sure you:
- inform your insurer when the property becomes unoccupied;
- fully secure your property;
- board or shutter accessible openings;
- remove valuable items;
- arrange to have gas and water services disconnected;
- remove all waste to discourage fly tipping;
- maintain and monitor electric alarm systems;
- prevent noise nuisance by nominating an alarm keyholder and advising the Police and Bury Council's Environmental Health Service;
- visit the property regularly to check it is in a safe condition;
- ensure toilets and drains are sealed to prevent rat infestation;
- are aware of your duty of care under the Occupiers Liability Act, particularly if you allow contractors and others to enter your premises.
