What do I pay?

The local council calculates the Business Rates bill by multiplying the rateable value of a property by the multiplier or 'poundage' which government sets on the 1 April of each year for the whole of England. The government normally changes the multiplier every year to move in line with inflation. By law the multiplier cannot go up more than the rate of inflation, except in the year of a revaluation when it is set at a level which will keep the total amount raised in the rates after the revaluation the same as before, plus inflation for that year. From 2005/6 the government also introduced the Small Business Relief Multiplier.

The Standard multiplier for 2008/9 is 46.2 pence in the pound.

The Small Business Relief multiplier for 2008/9 is 45.8 pence in the pound.

Details of the rateable value and the multiplier are shown on the business rates bill.
